So I’m writing this VERY delayed – sorry! 18 months (or more) has passed since we went to Hawaii and we have neglected this site. But no more!
We left Sydney with our friends Ben and Kirby, and we met up with another friend Gen whilst we were there. We flew direct to Honolulu and immediately to the island of Maui. Maui is a volcanic island made up of two peaks with a valley in between. It is very green and luscious, with one of the most famous surf breaks in the world (Jaws).
One of the first things we did was go to Walmart for a true american experience. Weird. We had hired a car for the 4 days we were on Maui, and were staying at Kihei.
One of the most famous things to do on Maui is the “Road to Hana” which we did – a narrow winding cliff side road around one side of the island that stops by beautiful waterfalls and rainforests, amazing beaches and quaint little towns. It’s a great drive but it takes all day. We probably left too late and had to return in the dark – that was scary! Worth it though.
On another day we drove to the top of Mount Haleakala, more than 3000m tall! Higher by far than the highest point in Australia, and this on a little island! It was very cold up there and noticeably harder to breathe, but it was so worth it as it looked like a Martian landscape above the clouds.
All in all, Maui is a beautiful island. Next up: Kauai!
