Our next stop after Puglia was Matera, an ancient, ancient city in the middle of nowhere in the deep south of Italy, in a state called Basilicata. It is hot here. Matera is situated on the edge of a big canyon. The canyon has natural caves, which is where the original settlers of this area used to live. Over time, more caves were made to escape the heat, and Matera eventually developed into something that seems like it would be in Star Wars. It’s a poor place, but a spectacularly impressive one. The views over the town from the top of the church carved into the rock is amazing. Definitely worth a visit.
