For one of our days in Belfast we took a day trip bus tour around the Northern Ireland Antrim coastline, and we are so glad we did – it was simply amazing and it was definitely another highlight of the trip so far. We first stopped off at the Bushmills Irish Whiskey Distillery for a morning dram before heading to some castle on a cliff that was apparently in Game of Thrones! We forgot what the castle was called. The biggest draw however was of course the Giants Causeway – formed by rapidly cooling volcanic lava a long long time ago. This area was so impressive to be at, we really loved it.
After this we went to the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge, where fishermen used to land their catch on a tiny island. We didn’t cross it but it was a cool sight and the water looked so beautiful and inviting (except for the most probably freezing temperatures! As you can see, it was very, very cold out there, and this was summer!). There was also another Game of Thrones filming location nearby at a quarry which was pretty cool.
We took the coast road all the way back to Belfast via multiple Glens, fishing villages and beaches, all of which were incredibly beautiful. If you’re ever in Belfast, this day trip is a must see.
So all in all, we didn’t spend very long in Northern Ireland, but it was worth every second. It’s an incredibly beautiful place with a very colourful history that seems to be undergoing a very positive transformation at the moment. We highly recommend.
